Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
