This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
