Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
